What to Expect

What to Expect

Welcome to our Fellowship!

Lakewood is a local body of believers in Jesus Christ. We exist to Glorify God and Make His Name Known. At Lakewood, you will find a warm and inviting group of regular people who love Jesus and will love you too! We are passionate about knowing God through understanding the Bible and serving Him by reaching out to those around us.

Often when people are looking around at churches near them, they have some questions. So, we have put together this list to help you as you consider joining us for one of our gatherings.

When and Where?

What can I expect in services?

How should I dress?

How do I find my way around?

What about my kids?

Can my child or newborn join me in the main worship service?

When and Where

We gather weekly, in person on Sunday mornings at 10:45am in our facilities at 2469 Sunburst Rd. Evington, VA 24550

We also have smaller group classes on Sunday mornings at 9:30am (typically called Sunday School). There are groups for children from birth all the way to adulthood. You will be able to find something for everyone in your family. Or you could join us on Wednesday evenings at 6pm. There are age-targeted programs for children and youth as well as Bible study with our pastor for adults. At various times, we also have special Bible studies for different groups as well as opportunities for us to go out into the community for service and outreach.

What can I expect in services?

At Lakewood, we strive to be content-driven and culturally-connected. This means that our songs, prayer, and teaching will first and foremost be true and right according to God’s Word. We also work to communicate in a way that makes sense in the cultural context around us. You will find a mixture of music that ranges from contemporary songs to well-known favorites. Whatever kind of song that we are singing, we want it to be done well and with God as our focus.

Our teaching and preaching is drawn straight from Scripture. Our pattern is to go through books of the Bible because we believe that the Bible is best understood when each section or verse is considered within its proper context. Occasionally, we step out of this rhythm to spend time examining a certain topic, theme, or group of scriptures. Whether we are working through a book of the Bible or addressing a topic through the lens of God’s Word we believe that the Bible is the final and ultimate authority for how we live our lives before God.

How should I dress?

Wear something that is comfortable and modest. You will find folks that are wearing dresses, suit jackets, jeans, and even shorts in the warm weather. What you wear is not as important as the intention of your heart.

How do I find my way around?

Even though you can see Lakewood from 460, you will need to enter the parking lot from Sunburst Rd. Just put it into your favorite navigation app and it will bring you right to the parking lot.

If you have children or need to ride the elevator, you will want to enter the bottom floor just to the right of the main steps. All of our children’s programs (except youth) are in classrooms on this bottom level. Otherwise, you can enter the main sanctuary by following the brick steps up to the main entrance. There will be someone to greet you as you come in, and they can help you find your seat. Feel free to ask anyone for help. We’re all very friendly!

What about my kids?

During the educational hour (Sundays at 9:30am), we have classes for babies all the way to youth through 12th grade. Nursery and Preschool aged children will remain with their classes throughout the morning until the Sunday main service is concluded around noon. Elementary aged children will attend the main service with their families until the beginning of the sermon at which point, they will be able to go to Children’s Church until services conclude.

For Wednesdays, we offer classes and care for babies through youth as well. All activities begin at 6pm.

We suggest that you arrive 5-10 minutes early to check your kids into their classes before heading to your own church activity/class.

Nursery: Babies – 2 years

Preschool: 3 years – 5 years (potty-trained)

Elementary: Kindergarten – 6th grade

Can my child or newborn join me in the main worship service?

Absolutely! We love to see our families worshipping side by side. In fact, all elementary aged children will join you in the service until time for Children’s church (if you wish for them to attend this portion of the service). But, you are welcome to keep all of your children with you as you feel comfortable.
